I’ve been noticing some rather strange problems with my Backpack account as of late. Sometimes when I load one of my pages, instead of getting the nicely formatted content I’m used to, I get a mess of unformatted HTML instead. Other times the AJAX features don’t appear to work. This behavior usually persists over numerous page reloads.
Really weird. Is anybody else having problems like these?
These two articles on Ars Technica and the EFF tell the story.
I’ve had it with the RIAA. They have turned the music industry into a legal morass. Now they are trying to make it illegal to copy songs from a CD onto a portable music player. At this point, I consider purchasing music from an RIAA label to be more trouble than it is worth. What is the point of purchasing their music if it is illegal to use it? Any future music purchases I make will be for content that is licensed under a Creative Commons-style license. I have made a few purchases in the past at places like Magnatune, but now I will be dealing with companies like them exclusively.
The RIAA and their pals the MPAA can have their DMCA and their DRM, there are plenty of other things for me to spend my disposable income on.
There is an article over on Real Simple that lists some common money leaks. Most of it is common sense stuff like using your bank’s online bill pay instead of mailing checks. A good read and a great way to start being smarter with your money.

A snow storm has knocked out my satellite television. While I wait for the signal to return, I’ve been passing the time playing with the Super Mario Super Synth. At least my DSL still works… Sigh.
Over the past couple days, I’ve incorporated all of my old posts at Blogspot into this blog. As a part of that process, I went ahead and deleted my old blog. If for some strange reason you want to read any of my older posts, you can find them in the archives here.
Just a little something fun for Friday. Check out this sweet Quicktime video.

Over at Miscellanies on the Gospel, there is a great post on why we need the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
While reading this article, I am reminded of a recent example in my own life. These past couple of months I have been struggling with creating a personal budget for my wife and I. Prior to getting married, I never made a budget. Thanks to some great lessons on stewardship from my parents, I never had to worry about having one.
Then I bought a house and got married, and suddenly my financial world was turned on its ear. Between the additional expenses that come with owning a home, and having a second person spending from the same bank account I could no longer keep track of our finances in my head. This resulted in a couple of purchases that I probably wouldn’t have made if I would have had a better picture of our financial status. We are not in danger of having our home repossessed or anything like that, but I do have to be very careful that we do not spend more than we are taking in.
Here is the really cool part. My recent visit to the doctor for an MRI ended up costing me more than I expected, and I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough money to pay all our bills and the MRI. Even while I was mentally freaking out, God was making things happen. Thanks to the rather mild weather we have been experiencing this past month, our utility bills ended up being significantly lower than expected. That money that we saved on heating our home should cover my medical bills.
That’s what makes God so cool. Even when I fall down, and even though I don’t deserve it, He is there to pick me back up. Thank you God for Your grace.
